Altabix Street Market

Elche, Alicante

The Altabix Market is one of the most popular weekly events in Elche/Elx, in the province of Alicante. Its stalls line the streets of the Altabix neighborhood, northeast of the city center, offering clothing, shoes, accessories, and fruits and vegetables from the Camp d'Elx. The Altabix Market is a regular destination for thousands of Elche residents and has grown to become one of the largest street markets in the Baix Vinalopó region. Regulated by the Elche City Council through the ordinance on non-permanent street vending, the Altabix Market operates in the morning. Located very close to the Elche Palm Grove, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Altabix Market combines the sounds of the vendors with the cool shade of the palm trees, creating a scene characteristic of Elche’s traditional markets.

History

A little background

he Altabix neighborhood experienced rapid growth during the second half of the 20th century in the northeastern part of Elche, linked to the city’s residential and university expansion. In this context, the Elche City Council established the Altabix Market as a weekly commercial service, following Elche’s tradition of neighborhood markets, which the municipality still organizes today.

Through successive ordinances governing non-permanent sales, the Altabix Market has solidified its location and fixed day, and today it is one of the busiest markets on Elche’s weekly calendar, featuring vendors from the Valencian Community and other regions. Its continued existence confirms its role as a popular event in the northern part of the city.

For Merchants

How to Get a Stall at the Altabix Street Market

Would you like to set up a stall at the Altabix Street Market market, located at Elche? To sell as a street vendor, you need a municipal street vending permit or license: this is issued by the town council, not the market itself, and typically requires that you be registered as a self-employed individual or a business, be in good standing with the tax authorities and Social Security, and have liability insurance that covers the stall.

Altabix Street Market is held on Wednesdays. The exact fee is set by the Elche town council; please check it before submitting your application.

Applications are submitted to the town council, usually online or in person, and may be granted directly (if there are open stalls) or through a public call for stall applications with a waiting list when demand exceeds the number of available stalls. You can download the municipal ordinance on street vending from Elche (check the town council’s official website to make sure it’s still in effect, in case it has been updated).

You can contact the Elche town council at mercados@elche.es.

  1. Contact the town council's commerce or markets department
  2. Gather the necessary documentation: registration as a self-employed individual or business, proof of being up to date with the tax authorities and Social Security, and liability insurance
  3. Submit the application for a street vending permit (through the online portal or at the registry office)
  4. Pay the applicable municipal fee, if required by the town council
  5. Pick up your authorization and bring it with you on market day
