A little background

he Mercado de la Paz is a municipal market hall located in the Salamanca neighborhood (Madrid). It was built in 1879 in the Modernist style and was the last of the indoor markets constructed in the 19th century. It was completely remodeled in the 1940s, and its interior layout and facades were completely redesigned. Of all these markets, this one and the Mercado de los Mostenses were still in operation at the beginning of the 21st century (both having undergone extensive renovations). The market has about seventy stalls. The market was saved by the Merchants’ Association, which took over its operation just as it was celebrating its centennial.
